Introduction to Visual Effects





This is an introductory course to the visual effects pipeline. You will be walked through the process of creating a short film featuring live action, animation, and other visual effects. We will start with the storyboarding process then move on to working with live action elements, including green-screen characters and background plates. We will animate, light, render, and composite a computer-generated prop into the shots. At the end of the class, we will edit the shot together, add sound, color correct and output the final film.


Course Syllabus

As a result of successfully completing this course, students...

Will be able to:

  • Understand how VFX post-production works
  • Learn how Storyboards are turned into Animatics and why they are important
  • Explore Green Screen work methods and how to light it
  • See how to create 3D VFX with 3D software
  • Learn about Digital compositing
  • See what the future holds for the field of Visual Effects

Will display the following attitudes/professional behaviors:

  • Meet deadlines.
  • Come prepared at all times.
  • Discuss work using specific and appropriate terminology.
  • Contribute to class discussion and critique.
