Product & Toy Design

This fun course will teach you how to brainstorm and develop an idea for a new toy. You will utilize different presentation techniques using pens, markers, and chalk to develop your design and then create a 3D mock-up.


Car & Motorcycle Design

This is an introduction to the fundamentals of car and motorcycle design. Students will gain the basic skills and concepts of the transportation design process. They will complete a car/motorcycle design project that will include a package drawing, concept sketches, renderings, and a final presentation layout.


Digital Character Design

Introduction to character design techniques utilized within the animation and games industry. Students will explore concepts such as quick drawing, line-of-action, volume, and caricature that will be utilized to complete original characters, model sheets, and turnarounds.


3D Creature and Character Modeling

This course introduces students to form through digital sculpting. These techniques are used by 3D modelers in the animation, visual effects, video game, and toy industries. Students will explore the process of digitally sculpting a 3D character.


Drawing

Learn how to quickly combine simple shapes to lay the groundwork for creating a variety of artwork, from still-life toys, figures, and even animal drawings. Take a deep dive into the exciting fundamentals of drawing!


Creativity in Design and Advertising

Unleash your creativity in 'Creativity in Design and Advertising,' a course that introduces high school students to the exciting world of graphic design and advertising. Explore the fundamentals of Adobe's creative tools, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Firefly. Discover how they can be used to bring your ideas to life. Learn about design principles and how to apply them to create compelling visual content. Join us and embark on a creative journey where your imagination knows no bounds!


Animal Sculpture

Embark on an exciting journey into the world of animal sculpture with the Academy of Art University's Summer Arts Intensive program. This unique course offers high school students an unparalleled opportunity to hone their sculpting skills. In this immersive two-week class, students will delve into the art of animal sculpture, working directly from live animal models. Using oil-based clay over an aluminum armature provided by the Academy, participants will learn the intricacies of setting up anatomically correct armature tailored to the specific animals they'll be sculpting. At culmination of their efforts, students will showcase their completed sculptures in a special exhibition, providing a platform to celebrate their artistic achievements with peers, family, and the wider community.


Architecture Maker Lab

Architects develop ideas by making. “What if?” questions are tested and refined in drawings and models in an iterative design process. Gain hands-on experience of this foundational design skill in our Maker Lab using woodworking and digital fabrication tools. This course will offer onsite students the opportunity to incorporate Brannan lab resources including the fabrication shop and the computer lab.

AE ARH10 must be taken concurrently.


Art in Architecture

This course will teach students the abstraction techniques used to derive architectural design concepts. Architectural design is an exercise in creating three-dimensional compositions for people to inhabit. Reinterpret a 2D painting as a 3D structure to imagine immersive spatial experiences. Unlock new discoveries for translating ideas. Create abstractions of the 2D painting to create architectural spaces.


Architecture and the City

Architects ask big questions: as online shopping grows, brick-and-mortar stores close. How can we repurpose the empty buildings? Dream big and explore ideas for the structure Macy’s is vacating. Collaborate and fabricate hands-on creations in our Makerspace. Through field trips, experience San Francisco through the eyes of an architect. This course will offer onsite students the opportunity to engage in local contemporary issues impacting them and make direct observations during field trips.
